Description

The traditional Irish súgán chair is the ultimate physical anchor for an authentic Samhain hearth gathering.
Historically, súgán—the Irish word for hand-twisted straw or hay rope—was woven by rural families into wooden frames to create highly resourceful, warm, and comfortable seating perfect for long nights of oral storytelling, traditional music, and fireside chat (seanchas). The frame is typically crafted by local woodworkers or families using native green timbers like ash, oak or elm. They were built without nails, using simple mortise and tenon joints. The seat is woven from tight coils of dried harvest byproduct (straw/hay) or seagrass. The weave provided natural insulation, making it much warmer and softer to sit on next to a stone hearth than bare wood.  A súgán stool was intentionally low to the ground keeping the user below the rising turf smoke of an open cottage hearth and close to the communal heat.
Pulling a súgán chair up to the fire invokes centuries of tradition – join Eoin to make a samhain súgán chair together at this years Púca Harvest Market.
