The Halloween tradition of wearing disguises, straw costumes, and grotesque masks originates from old Celtic beliefs, when folk hid their identities from wandering spirits and fairies during Samhain when the boundary between worlds was thin. If an unmasked living human was spotted by an otherworldly Púca, they might risk being brought to away beyond the veil, never to be seen again.
Luckily, the Fingal Mummers are here to help! A traditional folk troupe in North County Dublin who connect these ancient Samhain masking rituals with modern Halloween celebrations.
Unlike other Irish mummers, the troupe in Fingal uniquely combines straw suits, tall conical hats, and fringed cloth masks.
Members of the Fingal Mummers are delighted to give a workshop & demonstration of straw hat/straw costume making associated with mummers, along with some music and a spot of dancing. Join us to prepare your authentic Samhain disguise!
All necessary materials will be provided including oaten straw, twine and ribbons.
The straw workshop is suitable for ages 10 + if accompanied. 11AM – 2PM.
