Sustainability
At Púca Festival, we believe world-class cultural celebrations should honour both people and the planet. Sustainability is not just a side note, it’s a core value shaping how we plan, deliver, and grow every aspect of the festival. Our goal is simple: to create unforgettable experiences that tread lightly on the earth.
Progress in 2024
In 2024, we built on the strong foundations from previous years and made meaningful progress across six key areas: energy, waste, transport, supply chain, accessibility, and biodiversity.
Energy
We switched to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel for all generators and lighting towers, cutting greenhouse gas emissions from these sources by an estimated 90%.
Waste
We upheld our zero waste to landfill commitment, working closely with local contractors, improving signage, and encouraging change through initiatives like our reusable cup scheme.
Transport
We introduced three new bus routes from Dublin, Drogheda, and Mullingar, alongside a busy shuttle service between Trim and Athboy, helping reduce private car use and lower emissions.
Supply Chain
We strengthened our vendor sustainability policy to ensure all suppliers meet our environmental and social standards. This included increased monitoring, pre-event engagement, and on-site checks.
Accessibility & Inclusion
We improved accessible facilities across venues, selecting sites with inclusive features and taking extra steps to ensure everyone can take part.
Biodiversity
We began weaving nature into the heart of the festival through community workshops using natural materials and collaborations with horticulture students who created educational plant displays.
Looking Ahead
We are now working towards EarthCheck certification, aligned with ISO 20121, the international standard for sustainable event management. This will guide our next steps and help us continually raise the bar.
Spirit of Sustainability Hub
In partnership with Meath County Council, we launched a vibrant space for panels, workshops, and educational displays, bringing together climate advocates, community groups, educators, and festival-goers.
Festival for the Future
Our journey is far from over, but thanks to the passion of our partners, the creativity of our community, and the enthusiasm of our audiences, Púca Festival is becoming a national leader in sustainable cultural celebration. Together, we’re proving that great festivals don’t have to cost the Earth and that with collaboration, care, and courage, the future of festivals can be as green as it is bright.
