ABOUT THE ARTIST
Imelda May is an Irish singer-songwriter whose jazz-a-billy sound blends traditional Irish music and rockabilly. Reminiscent of her childhood inspiration Elvis Presley, an Imelda May gig fuses time-honoured rock ’n’ roll with jazz for the perfect combination.
Winning ‘Best Female Artist of the Year’ at the 2009 Meteor Awards, Imelda May’s albums Love Tattoo and Mayhem raced to the top of the Irish charts. Gathering comparisons to Billie Holiday and a wealth of critical acclaim, her award nomination as ‘Best Burlesque Singer’ should leave you in no doubt – Imelda May is the modern face of jazz.
Imelda May’s career began aged 14 filming an advert for fish fingers; these days she’s more likely to be found at the heart of fashion than selling frozen food. Flaunting her unique 1950s style on the front cover of the Irish Sunday Times Style Magazine, Milan Fashion Week took notice and hosted Imelda May for a Roberto Cavalli private party performance.
Matching a face to the award-winning voice, Jay Leno and Jools Holland celebrated Imelda May’s Johnny Got a Boom Boom on both their TV shows. As recognised for her unique jazz vocal style as her Elvis-inspired coiff with its distinctive blonde streak, Imelda May gigs come alive with guitar, tambourine and traditional Irish drum the bodhran. Imelda May tickets sell out fast, with audiences clamouring to see the jazz-a-billy icon on tour.
